Re “A Devastating Blow to a Creative Dream” (Arts, Oct. 5):
The devastation of Western North Carolina’s arts and crafts communities, like the River Arts District of Asheville, will be set right by community action and government funding.
Government action is aiding the restoration of beauty. In this election, one candidate heaps scorn on government action. It’s worth remembering that our tax dollars — federal, state and local — are a powerful way the cost of catastrophe is shared in order to make restoration possible.
The money and sweat equity — and love — invested to make the River Arts District, Burnsville and Chimney Rock what they were will now be a template for aid and rebuilding. None of that effort was a waste.
My mother lives in Asheville and has been part of the crafts scene there for decades. The recovery day by day is amazing, because of neighbors pulling together along with government workers and money. Of course, some recovery will take much longer. And climate disruption — which one candidate claims is a hoax — will require changes.
Leadership matters, especially in a crisis. Thank you, President Biden and Gov. Roy Cooper, for acting quickly and skillfully.

Re “Disinformation Is Hampering Helene Recovery” (front page, Oct. 7):
I just came back from a three-day business trip to Tampa.
I drove all over the Tampa area. Not all areas were slammed. In areas of Clearwater one block was slammed, while others were totally fine. One house on a block was destroyed, while the home next to it was untouched. Mother Nature has no shame about what or whom she affects.
