    MANILA, Philippines—San Beda finished the first round of the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament with its third straight win in a Season 99 Finals grudge rematch over Mapua.

    The Red Lions outlasted the Cardinals, 76-69, in overtime at Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday to cap off their momentous first round.

    Yukien Andrada finished with 18 points and nine rebounds including five crucial points in the extra period. Yesteryear’s Finals MVP James Payosing relived Mapua’s nightmare as he finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to down their Finals rival anew.

    Marc Cuenco turned in an all-around game of 20 points, five assists and four rebounds for Mapua. Reigning MVP Clint Escamis, though, struggled from the field but still managed to finish with 19 points.

    With the win, San Beda created a logjam for the second seed with the Cardinals and Letran with an identical record of 6-3.

    College of St. Benilde, meanwhile, ended its first round with a dominant win over Jose Rizal University, 84-69, in the stacked game day’s first clash.

    Rookie Jhomel Ancheta powered the Blazers with 17 points and five rebounds while Gab Cometa scored 15 with three steals to match. The troika of Allen Liwag, Mark Sangco and Justine Sanchez also helped the cause with 12 points each.

    Joshua Guiab’s 24-point and seven-rebound outing was put to naught as the Heavy Bombers finished the first round with a 3-6 card. Marvin Raymundo and Joseph Pangilinan also scored 12.

    The Blazers bounced back to the win column following a loss to cellar-dweller Arellano.

    Emilio Aguinaldo College bolstered its Final Four chances at the end of the first round following a win over San Sebastian, 97-86, to improve to a 4-5 card.

    The Generals’ victory sent the fifth spot into a frenzy with three teams, including Lyceum and Perpetual Help, caught in a tie with identical records.

    The Stags, meanwhile, absorbed their seventh straight loss after starting the season with back-to-back wins for a 2-7 card.

    Harvey Pagsanjan top scored for EAC with 20 points while King Gurtiza and Jude Bagay scored 14 and 13, respectively in the win. Wilmar Oftana tallied a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win as well.
